Energy Panorama June 2022

Previous Panorama

Welcome to the June edition of Energy Panorama.

We are pleased to feature our summary report based upon our Argentina Energy Roundtable, held in collaboration with the University of Buenos Aires’ Center for the Study of Energy Regulatory Activity (CEARE).

With the Summit of the Americas taking place just up the road in Los Angeles this month, we had the pleasure of attending various elements including the Civil Society Summit, the CEO Summit, along with several other sidebar events and meetings.

As leaders and executives from across the hemisphere arrived in Los Angeles for the Summit, we launched our Latin America Energy Transition Workforce Readiness project web site. The site contains a detailed report, our Latin America Energy Transition Workforce Readiness Barometer and Energy Transition Snapshots for the eight countries featured in our analysis.

Soon after the momentous election of Gustavo Petro in Colombia, we convened a webinar and virtual panel featuring our Non-Resident Fellow, Roger Tissot, and John Padilla of IPD Latin America. They debated how the incoming administration will translate campaign rhetoric to concrete policy platforms, particularly with regards to the economy, energy sector and international relations.

Also this month, we launched “Geothermal across the Americas – A Three-Part Webinar Series exploring the potential of geothermal” in collaboration with Geothermal Energy Advancement Association (GEAA). Part I: Geothermal as a Game Changer focused on the enormous potential derived from a variety of sources, ranging from traditional development to shallow low grade (low enthalpy) heat available everywhere, but also repurposing of oil & gas wells to extract heat. Perhaps most exciting and potentially game-changing is the potential to extract lithium from geothermal brine with several pilot projects underway.

Our Non-Resident Fellows were active writing this month. Leonardo Beltran contributed commentary on Mexico as part of the Latin America Energy Advisor Newsletter and responded to the question: Is Pemex Taking Good Advantage of High Oil Prices? He also authored an op-ed on how the Summit of the Americas can support a just energy transition across the region. Chris Sladen penned his latest Energy Matters essay “Mind that gap!” focused on investment in the energy sector or the lack thereof.
