Institute of the Americas' 2021 Annual Report

On behalf of the Institute of the Americas, I am pleased to share our 2021 annual report.  We hope you will read the entire report (available for download here). Thank you for being part of the Institute of the Americas’ community this past year. We are pleased to share some highlights made possible by your generous support.

  • In May, we marked the 30th anniversary of the La Jolla Energy Conference with a month-long series of thought-provoking panels and roundtables as well as deep-dive interviews.
  • We undertook research and publication of studies focused on China’s growing energy ambitions in Latin America, Clean Energy Cost-Savings at CFE in Mexico and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) across the Americas in support of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
  • A new Environment & Climate Change program was established that included welcoming the former UC Gulf of California Marine Program as an integral part of the Institute.  We also partnered with the UC San Diego Center for U.S-Mexico Studies on a U.S-Mexico Climate Change Working Group together with the Tecnológico de Monterrey and the Brookings Institution.
  • In the absence of our traditional in-person programming, we launched the Hemisphere in Transition webinar series. Our programs featured experts on Cuba, Central America’s Northern Triangle Region, Canada, Ecuador, and Mexico. We also convened our first hybrid event on the future of U.S. Engagement in the Hemisphere and Energy & Climate Financing in Latin America.

Across the Americas there is much work to be done as the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to a public health crisis in Latin America but also the region’s most widespread economic downturn in a generation.   At the same time, democratic institutions have weakened in various countries in the region as income inequality and poverty is growing.

As the Institute celebrates its 40th anniversary, we stand ready to lean in and do our part by striving to make a meaningful social impact in the work that we do.
