2017 Cathay NBA Youth Madness to Feature First-Ever Coaches Clinic for Local Coaches

TAIPEI, March 24, 2017 – Cathay Financial Holdings and the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that the 2017 Cathay NBA Youth Madness, a university-based 3-on-3 basketball tournament, will return to Taiwan for the seventh consecutive year from March 27 – July 2.
For the first time, the program will include a coaches clinic to help develop local coaches and further youth basketball development in Taiwan. NBA Champion Shawn Marion will tip off the tournament on March 27 at Taipei Shih Hsin University in Taipei, where he will be joined by Cathay Financial Holdings Senior Vice President Marcus Yao and NBA Taiwan Vice President and General Manager Bimal Kapoor. While in Taipei, Marion will also visit select universities to encourage students to live a healthy and active lifestyle through basketball. On March 30 at the Taipei Nan-Gang Sports Center, Marion will lead a clinic for 40 P.E. teachers and coaches, focusing on basketball training techniques as well as strength and conditioning.

The Cathay NBA Youth Madness 2017 features both male and female divisions in the elite and open groups and is divided into North, Central and South regions. Students who have registered for college-level games in Taiwan will be required to play in the elite group. The Regional Finals will be held May 21 at National Taiwan University and June 17-18 at Shih Chien University in Taipei for the North region; June 10-11 at Taroko Park in Kaohsiung for the South region; and June 4 at the Feng Chia University in Taichung for the Central region. The top teams from each region will advance to the National Finals from July 1-2 at Taipei Chante Boulevard, which will feature an appearance by an NBA player and performances by an NBA dance team. The national champions will be rewarded with a unique NBA experience trip to the U.S. and runners-up will win air tickets and game tickets to NBA Global Games China 2017 Shenzhen stop.
