It is well-known that one can live very well in Vienna.
Now a new study has confirmed the former imperial capital is not only pretty, but also relatively low-priced, and thus a very liveable place. In 2019, Vienna was named the most liveable city in the world for the tenth straight year by the consulting company Mercer, Zurich was rated second.
If one takes a closer look at living expenses, Zurich is rated first, and is thus the most expensive city in the world, according to the latest ranking of the research company Numbeo. In contrast, Vienna is gratifyingly ranked 166th in the world in terms of living expenses. The ranking was compiled on the basis of the several criteria, taking account of costs for rents, food and restaurants. Purchasing power also played a role in the rankings. Other Swiss cities, namely Basel, Lausanne, Geneva and Bern, were rated second, third, fourth and fifth respectively with respect to the cost of living. Four of the cities rated sixth to tenth in terms of living costs are in Norway.
