Peru’s Banking Boss, Julio Velarde, Named Best Central Banker in the World

Peru’s Central Bank chief, Julio Velarde, has been qualified by Global Markets, Latin Finance and Global Finance magazines as one of the world’s best central bankers and Latin America’s best central banker 2016.

The award, given in recognition of his management and the country’s monetary stability, was announced in Washington during the annual governors’ meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, IMF.

Other bankers ranked along with Velarde are the governors of the central banks of Israel, Lebanon, Paragay, the Philippines, Russia, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Velarde studied economics at the Universidad del Pacifico and completed his MA and a PhD in economics at Brown University, was a director of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, BCRP, from 1990 to 1992 and 2001-2003, and served as dean of the economics faculty at Universidad del Pacifico between 1986 and 2003.   He was appointed governor of the BCRP in 2006 at the beginning of Alan Garcia’s administration and has served in that position since then.

Andina news agency reports on Velarde’s “ impressive list of awards, including Global Finance award for World’s Best Central Banker in 2016 and 2015, The Banker’s 2015 Central Banker of the Year, the Distinguished Service of the Year prize given in 2012 by Latin Trade at the BRAVO Business Awards, and Emerging Markets’ Central Bank Governor of the year in Latin America.
