Green Hydrogen for China

China’s first mega green hydrogen production plant is under construction.

China is the largest hydrogen (H2) producer of the world with 40% of the global production. But only 3% comes from renewable energies and qualifies for „Green Hydrogen”. This is going to change now. In Inner Mongolia, China’s second largest coal mining area, a huge Green Hydrogen Plant is under construction. The hydrogen will replace 680 million liters gasoline per year. The H2 production will start in 2023 and by 2030 the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology projects 1 million H2 cars on the roads in China. JP Morgan projects, that by 2050 around 30% of all trucks in China will run on hydrogen. Recently Great Wall Motors delivered the first 100 hydrogen trucks and they are 30% cheaper as the diesel versions. However there is a squeeze in Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysers, which splits the hydrogen from oxygen in water. Chinese Electrolysers are 80% cheaper than European equivalents at $ 200 per Kilowatt.
