On 21 October 2016, Jesse T H Chang, Managing Partner of TransAsia Lawyers and CEO of ChinaGoAbroad, spoke at the Conference on Legal Risks and Countermeasures of International Investment and Trade hosted by the China Law Society in Beijing.
Presenting to an audience of senior legal practitioners and business leaders from 24 countries, Jesse discussed the great significance of the One Belt, One Road initiative, while stressing its inherent political risk.
Drawing on 30 years’ experience in Chinese outbound investment, Jesse observed that “gauging political risk is a complex and subtle art”, involving a deep understanding of local politics, diplomacy and social issues. Nonetheless, he proposed several simple measures to safeguard Chinese investments, including greater reliance on political risk insurance.
