Dr. LIU Yishi from Tsinghua University: The Construction of "New Beijing"

Event Intro

Columbia Global Centers | Beijing will have Dr. LIU Yishi from School of Architecture, Tsinghua University to deliver a public lecture. The talk will give a general picture of the urban development to Beijing since the late 19th century, and will end around the first decade under Maoism.

Guest Speaker

Dr. LIU Yishi is a lecturer from School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. He also serves as the secretary of the China Modern Architecture History Academic Committee of the Architectural Society of China, History Branch. His research area mainly focuses on modern architecture history and city history of China and modern architecture protection. He received a Ph.D. degree from University of California, Berkley, a master of Engineering Degree from School of Architecture, Tsinghua University and a B.S. in Architecture from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He was a visiting scholar at University of Virginia School of Architecture and Jefferson Research Center.

Moderator

Ying Qian is an assistant professor of East Asian Languages and Culture, Columbia University. She received her doctoral degree from the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University in 2013. She is interested in a wide range of topics in Chinese literature, cinema and media studies, including documentary cinema in comparative perspectives, experience and memory of China’s revolutions and socialism, and writing, translation and filmmaking in China’s multi-lingual and multi-ethnic border regions and among the Chinese diaspora.

Besides academic research, she has been a filmmaker, critic, and film programmer. She has been programming documentary and Asian cinemas for the last five years. Her film criticism has appeared in Chinese, English and Czech language newspapers and journals, and her own documentary and short films have been exhibited and broadcasted in a number of countries.
