According to the recently published “13th Five-Year Plan for Sports Development”, three objectives have been set for developing Chinese basketball industry. These include an emphasis on reforming the basketball industry’s structure, advancing clubs management and operations, strengthening the league system, as well as placing greater focus on youth training and nurturing future star players. With the provision of the Central Government’s initiative to promote the sport through various policies and programs, it is widely recognized that Chinese basketball has been reaching new highs in recent decades.
The policy mainly stresses on the importance of expanding basketball-related social infrastructure, such as funding for basketball courts in qualified cities and provinces, optimizing capital for smart basketball stadiums to enhance utilization rates, and increasing basketball investment via social capital and government funding. In addition, the introduction of Mini Basketball Program aims to reinforce basketball training for children and open up more potential opportunities in the basketball industry. It also advocates the construction of more than 30 young talent reserve training bases in China, which will facilitate the overall sustainable youth talents training system. The rapid advancement of science and technology also generated a lot of variety in innovative training methods, scientific training equipment and medical rehabilitation, in turn opening up international investment opportunities.
Furthermore, the IOC Executive Committee announced that 3x3 basketball will officially join the Olympic family at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games, which should offer greater promotion opportunities for the basketball industry. Moreover, Chinese basketball continued to legitimize itself on the world stage after successfully winning the rights to host the 2019 Men's Basketball World Cup, in a bid to improve the popularity of basketball in China.
However, there are also considerable challenges and obstacles in continuing to sustain the rate of development. For example, Chinese basketball continues to lag behind in various areas including in methods of scientific training. Youth development is also stunted due to an insufficient number of professional coaches and other personnel. There are also questions to be asked regarding how to band together certain aspects of the youth development system, these include sports and education, professional basketball and campus basketball, etc.
World Basketball Convention & Exhibition China (WBCE2018) will be held on May 23–25, 2018 at the Crowne Plaza Beijing Sun Palace, China.
