The building of the Silk Road Economic Belt is amid many obstacles, said Yang Shu, President of Central Asia Research Institute in Lanzhou University. Such obstacles include the instability of Xinjiang and Central Asia, the different in railway gauges among China, Central Asia and Russia, and the implications of the Arctic passage. To address such concerns, developing the economy in Xinjiang will be an important part of the solution.

Gansu Province officially released on 1 December 2014 the Gansu Province Plan Summary on Building Major Scenic Spots along the Silk Road Economic Belt Route (2014 to 2020), a joint work of Gansu Tourism Administration and Gansu Forestry Survey and Planning Institute.
