Switch Announces Major Expansion

The Las Vegas-based company Switch, developer of SUPERNAP data centers, has announced a major expansion in Nevada.

Switch plans to invest nearly $1.5 billion in the development of SUPERNAP 9 through 12 in Southern Nevada on an investment schedule from 2016 to 2036. This expansion is the largest to-date for the company and follows expansions of more than $712 million in Southern Nevada during the past five years.

The company simultaneously intends to construct the “SUPERLOOP,” a fiber line connecting Las Vegas, Reno, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles.

“This is incredible growth for a Nevada-based company, and we’ve been very fortunate to have worked with Rob Roy during the past few years as he has again and again innovated in the marketplace and doubled down on his company’s commitment to both community and economic development in Nevada,” said Jonas Peterson, CEO and President of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance. “Rob Roy has been an ally to economic development efforts in Nevada, and we’re lucky to have him here in our community.”

When Switch expands operations in Clark County, it will employ 500 full-time employees in addition to providing hundreds of construction jobs. The company’s colocation data center model also helps create hundreds of ancillary jobs related to clients who monitor and maintain their companies’ servers within the Switch ecosystem.

Following passage of Senate Bill 170 during the 2015 Legislature, qualifying data centers are much more competitive in the regional market. The legislation was a major reason for the company’s expansion and has helped Nevada maintain competitive advantages for data centers.
