Iran's Ties with China & the EU: Treading carefully, but deepening

Ties between China and Iran are expected to deepen as Tehran seeks to benefit from the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative and Beijing needs Iranian oil supplies.

Higher EU investments in Iran may suggest that they are unlikely to want to see the nuclear deal undermined despite Trump’s threats.

Our baseline-scenario sees Trump refusing to certify the deal in May and the US continuing to threaten to undermine the deal if changes are not made -- similar to the status-quo situation in 2017.

Saudi Arabia: Joining the clean energy race

In 2018, Saudi Arabia will be putting out a total of 4 GW of renewables between Q1 and Q4. This will be broken down into eight projects, of which 3.2 GW will be solar PV and 800 MW will be wind.

Tapping nuclear energy will make Saudi Arabia the second country in the GCC to do so after the UAE, which is set to start up its first reactor in 2018.

Short to medium-term challenges facing Saudi Arabia’s petrochemical industry include the sustainability of its competitive advantage, technological innovations and competition from the US and China.
